Hydration is just as important to staying alert and focused in the afternoon, as healthy snacking is. Eat, drink and sparkle, everyday! #RethinkYourDrink
I’m all about healthy eating. There’s nothing that contributes to a thriving lifestyle more than eating real food, well, except hydration. You can’t feel wonderful when you are dehydrated. How I know this is to be true is for months, no scratch that, for years, I have eaten super clean for about 80% of my diet. My day consisted of eating plenty of fresh fruit, greens and healthy protein sources. Every day, around 3 o’clock in the afternoon, I would start to feel tired, lethargic and unfocused.
After a long hard look at my almost perfectly balanced diet, there was no other obstacles, that I could see, contributing to my afternoon slumps. Except …
What? Really? Does dehydration cause a person to feel totally zapped of their energy and make them crave all things sugar? It sure does and it did! Coffee and sugar became my afternoon snack and I paid the price. There’s no way you can stay alert and energized throughout your day when you are dehydrated.
Did you know that dehydration can also cause those nasty head aches you get in the p.m (the ones you blame your lack of coffee for)? What is our number one afternoon beverage? Coffee or maybe a sugary drink, and they do work, for a bit, to give you the buzz, but both also play a huge role in dehydration and crashing.
Coffee and soft drinks do NOT hydrate you. In fact, they dehydrate you even more!! Every time you consume caffeine and sugar, you lose beneficial water from your body. The rule of thumb is to drink a glass of water before and after each cup of coffee and with the sugar added, you need even more hydrating.
So, my coffee pot became off-limits in the afternoon and I replaced my cup of java with a sparkling glass of water, like my favourite, Nestle Pure Life Sparkling. It’s water with absolutely no sugar, so you totally rehydrate your body and get a pick me up without the sugar crash later on. Pair it with a healthy no-sugar snack and I know you’ll be sparkling all afternoon, it’s became my proven method for feeling great all day long. I challenge you to try it! Just pass up the sugar and coffee in the afternoon and recharge with lots of water and some real food.
You’ll notice when you haven’t had your sparkle, you’ll start to feel the slumps coming on. Nestle has made it super easy and delicious to stay hydrated all through the day.
Other reasons you’ll love Nestle Sparkling:
- there’s no refined sugar (no sugar crash)
- there’s no fat in these drinks (enjoy as much as you want)
- mild natural flavours (perfect for your morning beverage)
- lightly carbonated (so you feel fancy drinking it on any occasion)
- kids will go crazy for it (it’s the fizz)
- they come in 355 ml cans (think hydration on the go)
- and in 1 litre bottles (perfect for home)
- the packaging is lightweight and recyclable
- enjoy all the flavours!
You’ll find Nestle Pure Life Sparkling comes in so many flavours, you’ll never be bored. The cans come in: Lemon Lime, Raspberry Lime and Mango Peach Pineapple and the bottles come in: Original, Lemon, Lime, Mandarin Orange and Black Cherry. They are all deliciously refreshing but Black Cherry is my favourite.
About the kiddies, I just wanted to mention that they get dehydrated as well. Mainly because we replace simple water with sugar sweetened juices, soft drinks and other sweetened beverages. Grabbing a soft drink on the go doesn’t have to be your kids answer to thirst. Kids need water to be healthy, Nestle gives you the better alternative to pop. My daughter loves me to fill her water bottle with the sparkling water (I swear she thinks it’s a soft drink) and I have no problem with that. While she’s running and playing at school, she has her handy sparkling water to replenish with.
A few of my afternoon snack ideas, that will keep you sparkling:
- Cheese, whole grain crackers and Sparkling Lemon
- Apple, peanut butter and Sparkling Black Cherry
- Hummus, carrot sticks and Sparkling Original
- Plain yogurt, cherries and Raspberry Lime
Enjoy your new found afternoon energy and stay hydrated!
